The Alaskan Malamute is a large breed of domestic dog originally bred for use as an Alaskan sled dog and is often mistaken for a Siberian Husky. The coat is a dense double northern dog coat. The usual colors are various shades of grey and white, sable and white, black and white, red and white, or pure white. Eyes are almond-shaped and are always brown; blue eyes are an indication of mixed breeding. According to the American Kennel Club, the primary criterion for judging the Malamute is its function to pull heavy freight as a sled dog. As many an owner has found out, the pulling power of a Malamute is tremendous.
The Siberian Husky is a medium-size, dense-coat working dog breed that originated in eastern Siberia. It is recognizable by its thickly-furred double coat, sickle tail, erect triangular ears and distinctive markings. An active, energetic and resilient breed whose ancestors came from the extremely cold and harsh environment of the Siberian Arctic, it was imported into Alaska during the Nome Gold Rush and spread from there into the United States and Canada, initially as a sled dog. It rapidly acquired the status of a family pet and a show-dog. (Wikipedia.org)
